What to expect
This course examines five common ethical situations encountered by speech-language pathologists, including communication access, goal selection, administrative pressure, documentation, and professional relationships. Participants will analyze each scenario, identify relevant ethical responsibilities, apply the ASHA Code of Ethics, and determine appropriate next steps.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify ethical concerns in common professional situations.
- Apply relevant provisions of the ASHA Code of Ethics to case-based scenarios.
- Analyze competing professional responsibilities in ambiguous ethical situations.
- Select appropriate next steps for addressing an ethical concern.
- Develop a personal process for approaching future ethical dilemmas.

About continuing education credit
This course satisfies ASHA’s requirement for 1 hour (0.1 ASHA CEU) of ethics content per certification maintenance cycle. The Shared Map is an ASHA Approved CE Provider.
If you request ASHA CEUs, your completion is reported to ASHA at the start of the next month.
Learning assessment
Participants will analyze real-world ethical scenarios and apply ethical decision-making principles by responding to interactive, case-based prompts throughout the course.
Satisfactory completion
To successfully complete the course and be eligible to earn ASHA CEUs, participants must complete all course content, respond to the required interactive prompts, and complete the course evaluation.
About the instructor
Suzanne Fabel, MA, CCC-SLP, SAS, SDL, CAGS
Suzanne Fabel is a speech-language pathologist with more than 25 years of experience, working in a supervisory role with New York City Public Schools Speech Services. Areas of expertise include augmentative and alternative communication, early communication, and prelinguistic communication. Suzanne Fabel created The Shared Map, a set of assessment and intervention resources for early communicators.
